Specific Microorganism Count

Specific Microorganism Count

There are many reasons for detecting the population of microorganisms in a particular sample. Especially in food establishments, it should be carried out at regular intervals in terms of the cleanliness of the production environment or the suitability of the food produced.

Microorganism counting is done by different methods.

- The most direct method of counting specific microorganisms is the use of a microscope and a slide with special chambers of known volume. These slides allow counting a small number of cells in a small volume and estimating the result to determine the population.
- Another specific microorganism counting method is electronic particle counting. Electronic particle counters are useful when routine counting of the number of bacteria in a sample is required. This method is based on the property of non-conductive particles such as bacteria to cause disruption in the electric field as they pass through.
- One of the most common methods of determining cell number is live plate counting. In this method, a sample to be counted is diluted in a solution that does not harm microbes but does not support their growth.

Specific microorganisms are counted in different foods with the methods specified.
